New Link Helps UWinnipeg Expand West

Main campus will connect to new science and housing complex

WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg, working in cooperation with area residents, will begin constructing a road later this summer to start linking its main campus with its developing western Furby campus. The land for the Furby campus has been cleared to make room for the Richardson College for the Environment and Science Complex, McFeetors Hall – Great West Life Student Residence and a new expanded University of Winnipeg Student Association’s Child Care Centre. The townhouse units in the Student Residence and the Child Care Centre will be accessible to community residents.

The City of Winnipeg’s downtown development committee unanimously approved the plan on Tuesday, July 8, 2008.
The new road between Spence and Young streets will allow:

  • Reduced traffic congestion on Young Street as it becomes one-way northbound between Portage and Ellice
  • An additional block of Spence Street alongside UWinnipeg will become a pedestrian-only zone closed to traffic
  • Winnipeg Transit buses will loop in back of the CBC Manitoba and a new heated bus shelter will be constructed for easy student and resident access
