Sandra Birdsell: Confessions of a Reluctant Mennonite

Sandra Birdsell, The University of Winnipeg’s 2007 Carol Shields Writer-in-Residence, will give a public lecture on her seven-year journey through the inner and outer landscapes of the Russian Mennonite world. In this lecture, Birdsell will provide anecdotal and biographical observations on how she came to understand the Russian Mennonite experience, while trying to break the code of silence adopted by her Russian Mennonite family.

The author of the gripping historical novel The Russländer, which was shortlisted for the Giller Prize, will discuss her search for an ethnic and cultural identity.
