The University of Winnipeg is proud to sponsor Soapbox Science Winnipeg 2021, taking place online Saturday, August 14.

Through this event, women researchers will get an opportunity to share their research and experiences.

Dr. Nisha Ajmani

UWinnipeg Master of Science in Applied Computer Science student Maryam Bafandkar is one of eight leading female scientists sharing expertise in technology, science, medicine, and engineering.

Her presentation, Artificial Intelligence in Agriculture, will provide insight into what Bafandkar has learned through her work with UWinnipeg’s cutting-edge digital agriculture research, which aims to transform food production in Manitoba and beyond. Through this project, she works closely with Dr. Manisha Ajmani, co-organizer for this year’s Soapbox Science event.

Ajmani is co-organizing the event with her sister, Nisha Ajmani.  The sisters are passionate advocates for women’s education in the STEM field and strongly believe women can help shape the future of the world by making a difference in the field of science.

“Providing a platform to women scientists to share their research is key to building a supportive community where people from varied backgrounds feel they belong and are being heard,” said Manisha. “Soapbox Science is an initiative towards building this diverse and supportive community.”

“The pandemic has been very tough on all of us, managing work-life balance is not an easy task. Through this event, women researchers will get an opportunity to share their research and experiences, and will be able to socialize virtually,” said Nisha.

This event is free. If you’d like to see what Soapbox Science looks like in action, watch session 1 and session 2 of the 2020 Soapbox Science Winnipeg event.
