UWinnipeg & Menno Simons College: 15-Year Affiliation Celebrated

Fifteen years ago the very first Menno Simons College (MSC) class was held on The University of Winnipeg campus. Back in 1989, just three students attended that first Conflict Resolution Studies class.

Today, over 1,200 University of Winnipeg students are enrolled in at least one course in International Development Studies or Conflict Resolution Studies offered through Menno Simons College, a college of Canadian Mennonite University and an affiliate of The University of Winnipeg.

“We provide the largest full time faculty and the largest selection of courses in the areas of International Development and Conflict Resolution of any university in Canada,” said Dr. Dean Peachey, Vice-President & Academic Dean of MSC.

Menno Simons College is dedicated to addressing conflict, poverty, and inequality through its interdisciplinary programs that draw upon courses from 12 other University of Winnipeg departments/programs.

“The MSC programs continue to grow and attract larger numbers of students because people understand that conflict, violence, injustice, and oppression are critical issues that touch all of our lives,” Peachey said.

University of Winnipeg President Lloyd Axworthy recognized the exceptional educational partnership between Menno Simons College and the University. “Menno Simons College is unique in Canada and provides a value-added education for University of Winnipeg students,” said Dr. Axworthy. “We are delighted to work together with Menno Simons College, encouraging University of Winnipeg students to seriously consider their role as global citizens and to take action toward a transformed, just world. And from the University’s recent QUEST conference it is clearly evident that Canadians from youth to seniors are interested in the pursuit of more information and education on the responsibilities associated with global citizenry.”

Canadian Mennonite University President Dr. Gerald Gerbrandt says the enrolment growth at the college has been gratifying. “We are delighted that Menno Simons College has become an integral part of equipping students with tools of conflict resolution and international development in a world that sorely needs them.”

On Saturday, October 23, 2004, Canadian Mennonite University will celebrate the 15th anniversary of Menno Simons College at its annual fundraising banquet at 500 Shaftesbury Blvd.
