UWinnipeg Opens its Doors to More Students

Extra supports designed to enhance first-year student success

WINNIPEG, MB – Being a first-year student at The University of Winnipeg just got better.

The University’s Senate approved significant changes to its first-year admissions requirements that will increase post-secondary access for students. As well, the Senate approved increases to student supports that will enhance student success in first year.

“We have broadened the entrance requirements to help more students qualify for acceptance,” explained Colin Russell, UWinnipeg’s Registrar and a faculty member. “At the same time we will give at-risk students the support they need to make the transition from high school, succeed in their courses and eventually graduate.”

The University has broadened its high-school course requirements for admission to allow more students the chance to apply, beginning this fall with changes to the English and Math prerequisites. The more accessible course requirements will be balanced with increased student supports including:

  • academic advising
  • study skills
  • tutoring
  • specialized courses in writing, mathematics, science, English as an Additional Language, and Introduction to University

The extra supports for students will enhance their ability to succeed in their first year of study and meet the required academic standards.

CHANGES TO ADMISSION – 2008/09

Beginning immediately, as a pilot project, the required English/Mathematics combination will be changed so that Grade 12 students will need a minimum of one credit English 40S (core) and a minimum of one credit of Mathematics 40S.

(Currently, students must have EITHER 2 credits of English 40S or A, plus one credit of Math 40S (Pre-Calculus, Applied or Consumer) OR 1 credit of English 40S or A, plus Pre-Calculus Math 40S).

CHANGES TO ADMISSION – 2009/10

Key changes for acceptance in 2009/10 include the above changes and the following:

  • students will be able to present a broader scope of courses at the Grade 12 level rather than being limited by a restricted list
  • the average on those Grade 12 courses will be increased from 60% to 65% to secure Regular Status admission
  • an average between 50 and 64.99% will result in Conditional Status admission

These changes will not apply to scholarship eligibility or assessment for admission to the Integrated Bachelor of Education program, both of which will be determined by a more restricted list of high school academic subjects.
