UWinnipeg Theatre Students Perform Original Works

WINNIPEG, MB–Students of The University of Winnipeg’s Honours Devised Theatre class will perform a series of self-conceived solo works from November 14-17, 2012Aporia: an evening of solo performances, is directed by Claire Borody.  Performances will take place at UWinnipeg’s Asper Centre for Theatre and Film. Admission is free and open to the publlic.

“Aporia can be used as an expression of doubt or of the difficulty establishing a theoretical truth,” expressed Director Borody. “It speaks to the acts of questioning and consideration at the core of each performance piece. The creative process for all actors began with individual research that explored themes and content of personal interest.”

The performances are not bound by a unifying thread; each segment explores a range of issues and viewpoints on life.  Individual pieces can be considered to be a visual, aural, and textual collage, influenced and inspired by various art-forms such as dance, literature, film, music, visual, and plastic arts, as well as popular culture and journalism.

“All performances have been created in a laboratory setting in which ideas were constantly tested through specific tasks and improvisations,” explained Borody. “Each piece is an audio-visual response to the performer’s encounter with source material, and generates specific questions about a particular issue. As a result, the performances vary in their abstraction and distance from the original source-work, and test the boundaries of theatrical form.”

These pieces are arranged as two separate series, each featuring four 20-25 minute solos.
– Series One performances run Wed, Nov 14 and Fri, Nov 16 at 8:00 pm.
– Series Two performances run Thu, Nov 15 at 8:00 pm and Sat, Nov 17 at 7:00 pm.

Performances take place at the University of Winnipeg’s Asper Centre for Theatre and Film, 400 Colony Street (entrance from Balmoral).

Admission is free and tickets are available at the door.
