The University of Winnipeg’s campus security van has a new feature, a device to protect the security of the environment.
The Centre for Sustainable Transportation (CST), located at The University of Winnipeg installed an OttoView™ device in the vehicle to access its use, fuel and trip costs and emissions output.
“This is the first stage in a project to electrifying the UW campus fleet vehicles,” said CST research director, Terry Zdan. “The CST will analyze the geographical information and vehicle diagnostics to identify a range of more sustainable options for future vehicles.”
The vehicle is used primarily for SafeWalk functions, to move people to and from campus housing, including the new McFeetors Hall residences and for various University errands.
The CST has initiated discussions with the Centre for Applied Research in Sustainable Infrastructure (CARSI) at Red River College to design an advanced technology vehicle for the UW. However, Zdan identified that in addition to an electric vehicle, a more efficient conventional vehicle could also be an appropriate recommendation for the time being.
To accommodate future electric vehicles, the CST has provided standards and guidelines for electric vehicle charging stations for the future UW’s Richardson College for the Environment.
The data gathered from the OttoView devices will also provide important information for the UW Campus Sustainability Plan. OttoView is designed and manufactured in Winnipeg, Manitoba by PERSENTECH Inc., an innovator in GPS and vehicle diagnostic solutions.
