80 inner-city students in grade six at Strathcona Elementary School and Sister MacNamara School took part in a very special graduation today, receiving certificates for completing The University of Winnipeg Science Kids on Campus program. The unique program brings children to UWinnipeg’s campus to study science, the environment and to experiment in UWinnipeg labs. Several UWinnipeg and Collegiate professors dedicate two hours every Tuesday over the school year to foster a love of science in the children.

The Honorable Kevin Chief, Minister for Children and Youth Opportunities, and Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, UWinnipeg’s President and Vice-Chancellor, joined in the celebration, along with Ms. Jan Boulanger, Associate Vice-President Community Affairs Great West Life. Belanger received the 2013 Duff Roblin Award and donated the proceeds of the Duff Roblin Award Dinner to Community Learning initiatives at UWinnipeg. This donation allows The University of Winnipeg Science Kids on Campus program to invite children from Winnipeg’s inner-city schools to receive enriched science programming including transportation, nutrition, t-shirts and equipment all free of charge.

The University of Winnipeg Science Kids on Campus Program began in 2008. Since then nearly 600 grade six students from inner-city schools have participated and over 450 hours of science- based activities and experiments have been offered to students.
