Provincial funding supports UWSA Day Care expansion

The UWSA Day Care on Furby Street broke ground on its new expansion Tuesday.

On-campus childcare is about to become more accessible thanks to new provincial funding for the expansion of the University of Winnipeg Students’ Association (UWSA) Day Care.

The Province of Manitoba announced this week that it will be committing $6,181,500 to 15 community-based capital projects and “new measures to increase the efficiency of the licensed early learning and child-care system by addressing regulatory barriers for operators.”

The UWSA Day Care is listed as one of those 15 projects. This student-led initiative to expand the daycare has been in the works for the last year-and-a-half.

“The UWSA is excited to expand our daycare to include 32 new spots,” says Kevin Settee, President of the UWSA. “We are committed to creating a university campus that is accessible and inclusive to all students, including student parents.”

The UWSA Day Care is a provincially licensed and not-for-profit preschool and infant toddler daycare centre. It currently has 96 childcare spaces.

“All the staff and parents are very happy about the news!” says Ioulia Berdnikova, UWSA Day Care Director. “It means a lot for families who are trying to get an education and raise children at the same time.”

The UWSA looks forward to initiating construction on the expansion and working with students and community members to increase access to childcare in Manitoba.

The expansion project will be managed by the University of Winnipeg Community Renewal Corporation (UWCRC). Development updates will be shared with the campus community.
