The University of Winnipeg Students’ Association (UWSA) held its annual Student Group Fair on October 6 at the Duckworth 2nd Floor Lounge, with 29 student groups participating. They helped promote their groups’ activities and initiatives while recruiting new members and volunteers.
The fair offered students food and refreshments, popcorn served by the Wesmen’s mascot, Wes Lee, and an opportunity to win a free 1-hour consultation with a graphic designer. Students who visited at least five student groups were also entered in a draw to win a free iPod.
Asfandyar Asfandyar, our iPod winner, visited groups like the Economics Students’ Association and Stylus Magazine, among others. Asfandyar is an international student, who came to the University of Winnipeg in December of 2009.
“When I first came here, I never thought to join a student group. After visiting the Student Group Fair that was organized by the UWSA, I feel there are groups on campus that I can join and belong to,” said Asfandyar. “Student groups are important because you get a chance to interact with people and get to contribute to student activities. Being an international student, I truly value the opportunity I had to visit student groups and I can’t express my sincere thanks to the UWSA enough. Thank you for the wonderful prize.”
Preliminary statistics from the University’s Taskforce on First Year Curriculum identified the need for student groups, as 25% of students drop out of university when they do not belong to a student group. The UWSA will be planning another Student Group Fair in the New Year to ensure students have meaningful experiences on campus and contribute to student life.
