WINNIPEG, MB– Dr. Charles Wong, Canada Research Chair in Environmental Toxicology at The University of Winnipeg, has been elected to the North America Board of Directors of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC).
Dr. Wong will begin his three-year term this November at the 33rd SETAC North America conference, to be held in Long Beach, CA. He has been actively involved in SETAC since 1997, and has received two of its most prestigious awards: the Early Career Award for Applied Ecological Research (2003) and the Weston Environmental Solutions Award (2007, given to an outstanding environmental chemist under age 40).
“We are very proud that Dr. Wong has been elected to this prestigious position. He will help to lead efforts by some of the world’s best scientists to put hard science into the environmental debate. This is fully in keeping with our university’s commitment to environmental sustainability,” noted Dr. James Currie, UWinnipeg’s Dean of Science.
Dr. Wong is a world expert in the detection, fate and effects of environmental contaminants, and is particularly interested in issues such as pollutant degradation and waste water treatment. In addition to using his expertise to study and develop solutions to problems here in North America, he is also an active collaborator with researchers in other countries (such as China and Costa Rica) to address problems on a global scale. Dr. Wong joined UWinnipeg in 2008, and is the director of the Thomas Sill Analytical Laboratory for Water Research Technology (STALWART) in the Richardson College for the Environment & Science Complex. Since his arrival, he has helped to raise over $6 million in external research funding to help further understanding of how better to protect our water resources.
