The Legacy and Future of the Church in the University

The University of Winnipeg’s Faculty of Theology invites the public, faculty and staff to the free Distinguished Lecture Series “The Legacy and Future of the Church in the University” on Thurs. Jan. 31, 2008 at 7:00 pm in Convocation Hall. Panel Guests include The Hon. Rev. Dr. Lois Wilson, The Hon. William Blaikie and Dr. Allen Mills with Dr. Nolan Reilly as Moderator.

This Distinguished Lecture Series begins the New Year recognizing the 120th Anniversary of Wesley College and 70 years of United College. These two Colleges are the roots and foundation that began the legacy and leadership in creating The University of Winnipeg more than a century ago. This lecture will discuss the heritage and the future role of the Church at the University.

Minister and retired Canadian Senator Lois Wilson gained attention as the first woman Moderator of the United Church of Canada and is an internationally recognized expert on human rights. Daughter of the Dean of Theology of United College, Wilson was born in Winnipeg and is renowned as the fist woman president of the Canadian Council of Churches. In 1980 she was elected Moderator of the United Church and in 1983 she began a nine-year term as President from North America on the six-person Presidium of the World Council of Churches.

The Hon. Rev. Bill Blaikie is an exceptional parliamentarian and outstanding public voice on the pressing issues facing the world today. Deputy Speaker Bill Blaikie has held numerous critic portfolios for the federal New Democratic Party caucus during the 28 years he has represented his Winnipeg riding of Elmwood-Transcona in the House of Commons. He is passionate about parliament and is known for his commitment to the environment, to Medicare, to quality public services, to fair trade, to democratic and parliamentary reform, to human rights and for his criticism of the corporate model of globalization.

Dr. Allen Mills specializes in political philosophy, Canadian political ideas, federal and provincial politics in Canada, contemporary central European politics and Czech politics. With several publications and articles in his repertoire of expertise, Mills currently is a political science professor at The University of Winnipeg. He obtained his B.A., (Hons), in history and political science from Trinity College at the University of Dublin. His M.A, in political science is from York University and his Ph. D was earned at the University of Western Ontario.
