The Duckworth Challenge: Winnipeg’s Two Universities Battle for Sport Supremacy

vball

Let the games begin! Volleyball and basketball teams from The University of Winnipeg and the University of Manitoba will go head-to-head in an ongoing rivalry dubbed the Duckworth Challenge. The games get underway Friday night at 6:00 p.m. when The University of Winnipeg hosts the volleyball portion of the annual Challenge.

Getting right into the spirit, members of UWinnipeg’s Alumni Association, along with Wesmen mascot Wesley Coyote, will lob miniature souvenir volleyballs into the crowd. And for the first time in Duckworth Challenge history, there will be a ‘Challenge Within a Challenge,’ sponsored by the Alumni, the Board of Regents, and the UWSA. During the breaks between games, non-Wesmen teams will compete in some fun and entertaining activities. Bins marked ‘Alumni,’ ‘Students’ and ‘Board of Regents’ will be on site and spectators can support their favourite team by donating a nonperishable food item or loonie—all food and funds go to the UWSA Food Bank. The team with the most donations at the end of the night wins the Challenge Within a Challenge.

“The Duckworth Challenge is a great opportunity for alum, family and friends to come home to The University of Winnipeg to support our alumni as they play the current Wesmen volleyball and basketball teams,” said Alumni Association President Debra Radi. “Hope you will come out and cheer on your alma mater and support the UWSA Foodbank!” UWinnipeg alumni can call 204.786.9711 to reserve a free family pass, courtesy of the Alumni Association. Regular admission is $8 (adults), free for children 6 and under, and $3 (UWinnipeg students with a valid student ID card) for games hosted at The University of Winnipeg.
