Graduate students will have their game on for the upcoming sixth annual University of Winnipeg Graduate Studies 3-Minute Thesis Competition (3MT™) on Thursday, April 11, 1:30-4:00 pm in Eckhardt Gramatté Hall. Master’s students from a variety of graduate programs will compete for a $1000 top prize and a $500 People’s Choice Award. The 15 competitors come from a range of disciplines and will require nerves of steel talent to compete in this arena of research.

The participants will each have only three minutes to stand before their peers and profs and articulate their thesis in a coherent and engaging three minutes with only one static slide. UWinnipeg’s 3MT™ is an exciting event that highlights the range of dynamic students doing research in an engaging, accessible, and compelling way.

Award winning researcher and Queen Elizabeth Scholar Nicole Dorville was  a previous competitor in the 3MT™. She graduates with a Master’s in Bioscience, Technology, and Public Policy this spring.

“It was a great learning experience to help prepare me for future presentations,” she said. “I tried to make it scientifically sound but also entertaining.”

The winner of the 2019 competition will compete at the Western 3MT Competition at the University of Northern British Columbia on April 17, 2019 and the National 3MT!

This year’s UWinnipeg judges include the Dean of Science Dr. Doug Goltz,  Dr. Melanie O’Gorman (economics), and Dr. Jaqueline McLeod Rogers (rhetoric & communications).

The 3-Minute Thesis (3MT™) is a research communication competition developed by The University of Queensland which challenges postgraduate degree students to present a compelling oration on their thesis and its significance in language appropriate to a non-specialist audience within just three minutes.
