New-tritious options in Duckworth Centre

Smoothie BarNew Smoothie Bar in Duckworth Centre now open for business; Café Bodhi to follow shortly

WINNIPEG, MB – Newly renovated space on the second floor of The University of Winnipeg’s Duckworth Centre now includes two new nutritious options for students and visitors:  Smoothie Bar is now serving customers and Café Bodhi and will be open for business within a week.

Café Bodhi, operated by Diversity Food Services, features a Grab and Go counter style service. Equipped with a traditional espresso maker and drip coffee makers, offerings include Green Bean organic Direct Trade Coffee.  Soups and baking made from scratch will be served daily along with the staple menu products. Café Bodhi will be open throughout the holiday season, providing increased employment stability for four staff members. Hours will be from 8:00 am until 6:00 pm Monday to Saturday.

“We are really excited to announce the return of Café Bodhi,” said Ian Vickers, Chief Operating Officer, Diversity Food Services. “This is a wonderful meeting place for the community. Being part of the United RecPlex offers us the opportunity to expose a new group of guests to Diversity and how delicious food can be made locally and ethically.”

Smoothie Bar is offering delicious and healthy smoothies made with all natural ingredients and no added sugar. Fresh squeezed vegetable juices, along with healthy energy drinks will also be available.  Hours will be from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and any time there is a sporting event.

“This is balanced nutrition made easy — fast, great tasting and healthy!” said Jackie Friesen, owner of Smoothie Bar, which is expected to employ six people.

The Duckworth Centre is now connected to the new United Health and RecPlex on Spence Street via skybridge on the second floor. This creates a block-long health, wellness and recreation destination for students and the surrounding community.

Established in 2009, Diversity Food Services is a joint venture between the University of Winnipeg Community Renewal Corporation and SEED Winnipeg. The social enterprise delivers nutritional, local food while providing meaningful employment for new Canadians, Aboriginal people, community residents and University students. Leaders in Environmentally Accountable Food Service (LEAF) provided eco-certification to Diversity in 2014.
