NSERC grants of $965,000 aid research at UWinnipeg

WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg is pleased to have been awarded Government of Canada, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) funding; awards come via the Discovery Grant, Research Tools and Instruments Grant and NSERC Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarship programs and total $965,000.

Discovery Grants were awarded to researchers over a maximum five year period and total $673,000. University of Winnipeg faculty receiving Discovery Grants this year are: Y.Chen (Applied Computer Science); A. Desroches (Psychology); A.Frey (Physics); C.Henry (Applied Computer Science); B.Jamieson (Physics); S.Ramanna (Applied Computer Science); and N.Rampersad (Mathematics/Statistics).

The University of Winnipeg also received $187,000 from the Research Tools and Instruments Grant program, awarded to E.Cloutis (Geography) and B.Jamieson (Physics).

Six NSERC Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarships – Master’s level were awarded to students from the Departments of Biology, Mathematics and Statistics, Physics and Psychology. The successful students are: Phillip Grayson, Blake Madill, Theresa McIver, Charelle O’Dunn-Orto, Lisa Teichroeb, and Jared Wiebe. Each student will receive a one-year scholarship of $17,500 for their continued studies and research.

NSERC is a federal agency that helps make Canada a country of discoverers and innovators for all Canadians. The agency supports some 30,000 post-secondary students and postdoctoral fellows in their advanced studies. It promotes discovery by funding more than 12,000 professors every year and fosters innovation by encouraging more than 1,500 Canadian companies to participate and invest in post-secondary research projects.
